There are lots of
good books on leadership development available today. Among
our favorites are anything from the Center for Creative
Leadership, "Good to Great" by Jim Collins, "The
Leadership Pipeline" by Ram Charan and "The Leadership
Challenge" by Kouzes & Posner. |

Inside Leadership Development
[ Leadership Skills ] [ Developing Leadership ] [ Coaching ]

Without doubt, the most popular topic in management literature these
days is leadership. Everyone, it seems, has discovered a need to
develop the leadership abilities of its employees, especially at the
senior levels. Effective leadership, especially at the most senior
level of an organization, makes a difference -- more of a difference,
according to some researchers, than any other factor (See Jim Collins'
book "Good to Great", or some of Daniel Goleman's work, for
example).
How are leadership skills developed? Although we do conduct
training programs, we are the first to admit that leadership is not
developed in the classroom. Some specific ideas and skills can be
learned, but leadership goes beyond them. We believe leadership
includes many attributes and behaviours, including:
 | Environmental Scanning: knowing what is
happening in the world outside the organization, and how these
external changes will affect the firm. |
 | Knowledge of the Organization:
Knowing how the organization works, and which people to call on in a
given situation. |
 | Setting a Vision: Based on the above, coming
up with a clear vision of where the organization is going, and how
to get there. |
 | Communication the Vision: Ensuring that all
employees understand and believe the vision. |
 | Building Capacity: Getting the right people in
the organization, aligning processes, strategies and staff with the
future needs of the organization. |
 | Motivating Followers: Allowing others to be
persuaded to strive to achieve the vision. |
To help clients build their own leaders, we offer assistance in
planning the development of leaders, institutionalizing an
organization-wide leadership development process, and also coaching
executives to refine their own skills. Click on a link below for
